Stealie Bahamas Stash Box

The Stealie Bahamas Stash Box is a hexagonal bamboo box, lightweight and lined in red velveteen. No longer visible, beneath the prominent Steal Your Face symbol, there’s a red Hibiscus and the tourist locale in script: “Bahamas.” I like to tease that the Stealie Bahamas Stash Box came to America on a cruise ship!

Each outer surface of this box has a cubed pattern made of tiny lines that shows through the decoupage, making it an interesting box to touch. The front boasts a full-stage shot of The Boys (with Jerry in red), framed by the Grateful Dead album title Steal Your Face. This box’s three-panel backside bears three stealies; the flanking two are black-and-white reproductions of the album cover; the middle one is a picture of a highly prized Owsley belt buckle. On the left side of the buckle, a cartoon Deadhead skeleton kneels with an expression of astonishment, and on the other a bug-eyed alien flashes the peace sign. Rounding off the box is a double-decker V-dub bus loaded with every GD symbol there ever was, even a sign post showing the way to “Garcia-ville” that points right to Jerry!

Every box has a secret; this one is from The Family Album, affixed to its bottom: “It’s important to esotericists that the lightning bolt has 13 points. It’s important to iconographers the colors are red, white and blue. It may be important to palentologists that the skull has 8 teeth.” The bold Stealie Bahamas Stash Box has a certain mysterious charm and exotic charisma. Dimensions: 5” L x 4.5” W x 3” H. This box found a happy home!
